Board of Directors

 Roger Williams

Roger Williams

Chairman

Roger is an executive with one of the world’s largest internet companies. Roger’s appreciation for the beauty and uniqueness of Hetch Hetchy Valley grew out of many hiking and fishing trips in Yosemite National Park. As a backpacker leader with the Sierra Club, he regularly takes others into the mountains to share in his enjoyment of these amazing natural resources. He lives in San Francisco and so has drunk a lot of water from the Tuolumne River that did not need to be stored in a national park.

Virginia Johannessen

Virginia Johannessen

Vice-chair

Virginia lives in Los Angeles and is involved in the entertainment industry with husband Chip Johannessen.  She feels passionately that Angelenos and all Americans need to understand they are being deprived of a second Yosemite Valley they already own within their national park.  She is working to spread that message on social media.  Virginia was born and raised in Berkeley, and educated at Harvard.  Her grandparents met on a Sierra Club trip, which at that point could include the Hetch Hetchy Valley.  She expects her daughter to be able to go on a Sierra Club trip that once again includes the Hetch Hetchy Valley.

Peter Van Kuran

Peter has 30 years business management experience in the global high-tech industry, and is inspired to work on Hetch Hetchy based on a lifelong love of hiking and climbing in Yosemite.

Jim is also primarily responsible for his family’s ranch located near the northeast corner of Yosemite, outside of Bridgeport, California.

Jim first visited Yosemite with his Boy Scout Troop some 70 years ago, and today still has that same feeling of magnificence whenever he returns. When he first visited Hetch Hetchy some 40 years ago and experienced its magnificence, his wife said the Reservoir should be drained. Jim thought she had lost it but today thinks she had wonderful foresight! he has hiked around parts of the Reservoir, fished at the far end, and hopes that his children and others can enjoy its full splendor.

Ann Hayden

Ann joined EDF in 2002 to help lead its efforts to improve urban and agricultural water supply reliability and restore the San Francisco Bay Delta estuary. She currently leads EDF’s work to advance implementation of sustainable groundwater management and water transfers as well as habitat markets to restore critical habitat to benefit the environment and agriculture in California. She builds broad coalitions of state and federal agencies, non-profit partners, landowners, and the private sector to support the development and implementation of environmental markets that help increase California’s healthy freshwater and terrestrial systems and improve delivery of the environmental services these habitats provide. Ann has earned an M.A. in Environmental Science and Management from UC Santa Barbara, and a B.A. in Marine Biology from UC Santa Cruz.

He staffed hundreds of bills and policy initiatives, including in 2004 the legislative request to Governor Schwarzenegger to study the feasibility of restoring the Hetch Hetchy Valley. He began his education at Davis Parent Nursery School and completed it at Phillips Academy Andover and Stanford University where he captained their wrestling teams. In retirement, he runs a small business importing and distributing a boutique brand of agave spirits. He and his wife are regular volunteers at Project Amigo in Colima, Mexico.

Lucho Rivera

Lucho Rivera

Luis ‘Lucho’ Rivera has been a climber since high school, ascending big walls throughout California and abroad. He’s been especially drawn to Hetch Hetchy’s towering granite, where he counts the ‘Pama Punku’ route on Wapama Rock as one of his first free ascents.

Lucho, along with Timmy O’Neill, is the star of Restore Hetch Hetchy’s new film “Finding Hetch Hetchy: The Hidden Yosemite”. When he isn’t off climbing on his own somewhere, Lucho can be found as a wilderness staffer/instructor for high school youth programs, leading  backpacking trips and teaching rock climbing.

Mecia Serafino

Mecia Serafino

Mecia Serafino loves all things nature, from Yosemite’s big granite walls to tarantulas and fungi. She wants more people, climbers as well as other park visitors, to come to Hetch Hetchy while still protecting the valley’s wild character. Mecia is an accounting professional in the construction industry in San Francisco.
